Introduction to the park
The main scenic area of the Summer Palace is composed of Longevity Mountain and Kunming Lake. The whole garden covers an area of 3.08 square kilometers, and the water surface accounts for about three-quarters. There are 70,000 square meters of ancient palaces and gardens in the park, and it is famous for its precious cultural relics. It is the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

The Summer Palace was formerly known as Qingyi Garden. It was built in the fifteenth year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty ( 1750) and burned down by the British and French forces in the tenth year of Xianfeng (1860). In the twelfth year of Guangxu (1886), the Qing court embezzled naval funds and other funds to begin reconstruction. Two years later, it took its present name as the home of Empress Dowager Cixi. It was destroyed by the Eight-Power Allied Forces in 1900 and restored in 1902. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, after several repairs, the Summer Palace has successively rebuilt important scenic spots such as four major continents, Suzhou Street, Jingming Tower, Tanning Hall, Wenchangyuan, and Farming and Weaving.

The Summer Palace is a collection of traditional gardening art, borrowing from the surrounding landscape, the imperial gardens are magnificent and full of natural charm, which highly embodies the gardening guidelines of Chinese gardens, "Although it is made by man, it is open to nature". In December 1998, the Summer Palace was included in the "World Heritage List" by UNESCO, and was evaluated as follows: 1) The Summer Palace in Beijing is an outstanding display of the art of Chinese landscape architecture. The landscape and nature are harmoniously integrated; 2) The Summer Palace is a concentrated expression of Chinese gardening thought and practice, and this thought and practice played a key role in the development of the entire oriental garden art and cultural form; 3) The Chinese imperial garden represented by the Summer Palace is a powerful symbol of one of the world's major civilizations.
